Whim Plantation Museum
Location: Mid-Island
St.
Croix's Age of Prosperity that took place in
the second half of the 18th century is
celebrated here. Once over 300 Danish
estates, today the ruins of the sugar mills
make for an interesting tour, along with
Scottish steam engines for crushing and
distilling. Demonstrations and exhibits
re-create the bygone era of the wealthy
plantation owner.
Operated by the St. Croix Landmarks Society,
this restored great house and sugar
plantation houses antiques, artifacts,
tools, china, and historical records from
the Danish period on St. Croix. The old cook
house is operational, and you'll want to
sample the Johnny cakes fried in traditional
West Indian coal pots! A handsome gift shop
offers unusual merhcandise. The Landmarks
Society also hosts events, such as
Candlelight Concerts and Straving Artists'
Days at Whim.
