Fort Frederik
Location: Frederiksted
A
National Historic Landmark, the fort was
built in 1760, and it was here that Danish
Governor Peter Von Shoulten emancipated the
slaves on July 3, 1848. In 1776, the first
salute from foreign soil to the new nation
of the United States was fired here.
Featuring a museum and art gallery, it is
open weekdays from 8:30am-4pm, and Saturdays
from 1-4pm. Admission is free, but a $1
donation is appreciated. The surrounding
area has been transformed in a beautiful
park, with a dramatic statue of slave
rebellion leader Buddhoe blowing a conch
shell signaling freedom. Frederiksted, known
as Freedom City, has a beautiful waterfront
with park benches, and a cruise ship pier. |
